Volcanic eruptions are one of the natural causes of air pollution. This is an amazing picture of an underwater volcanic eruption in Tonga.

It actually looks kind of nice…
Does underwater eruption causes pollutions too?

Hi Zoe,
From what we learnt in class, the concept of pollution is basically foreign substances that are introduced into the environment (air, water, land), and pollution can be caused by humans or nature.
So…do you think underwater volcanic eruption causes pollution? What can you remember from our lessons about volcanic eruptions?

What causes underwater volcano to erupt? Awesome pictures.

Hi May! Thanks:)
Underwater volcanoes erupt due to similar reasons as volcanoes which are on land.
An earthquake happening can cause cracks in the ground, and magma (liquid lava) can rise out of these cracks to the surface. The pressure that has been kept in the volcano is released, and so an eruption happens.
Alternatively, sometimes the lava just escapes from underground onto the surface through fissures (small cracks) that are in the ground / in the volcano. These fissures are not caused by earthquakes but are just there. So if you can imagine…it’s like a blocked pipe…all the lava is stored there and more lava keeps coming into the pipe…eventually, the volcano has to erupt because of too much pressure!
